The Mountain Top Inn & Resort is one of Vermont’s most sought after four season destinations. Centrally located in Chittenden, Vermont – just a short drive from Killington and literally perched on the top of a mountain – our resort offers the perfect combination of easy access and private retreat. Set amidst 350 acres with sweeping views of a pristine mountain lake and the Green Mountain National Forest, The Mountain Top Inn & Resort is perfectly situated to deliver the best of Vermont, 365 days of the year. Our ample space and variety of amenities and accommodation types makes us an ideal destination for a wide variety of guests from singles and couples to families, wedding groups, tour groups, corporate retreats and more….there is something for everyone at The Mountain Top Inn & Resort.
While our resort has seen the addition of many new attributes in recent years such as an event barn, spa & salon, expanded gift shop, floral services, four luxury cabins, four new guest houses, a beach pavilion, completely restored stables, and more, the resort itself is steeped in history. The Mountain Top Inn, as it was originally named, began as a converted barn from the Long family’s turnip farm founded in the 1870’s. In the 1940’s, Mr. William Barstow purchased the farm as a gift for his wife, Francoise – an active New York socialite always entertaining a variety of guests. Throughout the ensuing years, improvements and additions to the original barn building were made to accommodate the growing number of visiting friends and family – eventually evolving into a full service Inn & Tavern. While Mr. Barstow, an associate of Thomas Edison, was a forward thinker, the couple maintained the integrity of property’s Yankee origins and protected the beauty and ecology of its natural surroundings which you can still see today.
In 1945, William & Margery Wolfe purchased the Mountain Top Inn. They continued improvements to the property and in 1955 put the Inn on the map when they hosted President Eisenhower and his entourage during a fishing expedition. Pictures of the expedition are still displayed today in the Main Lodge Lobby. Ike’s View, a luxury room in the Main Lodge in which the President stayed, is aptly named for him.
In 1964, realizing the natural terrain was ideal for winter sports, the Wolfe’s began to develop a cross country ski center and trail system. Today, as one of the oldest in the country, the resort boasts 60 kilometers of trails, and some of the best cross country skiing and conditions you can find.
In 1977, a fire destroyed the majority of the original Inn’s structure. Undeterred, the Wolfe’s rebuilt the Inn using traditional post and beam construction. Large douglas fir beams span the lobby and lend warmth and charm to the ‘Main Lodge’. Rows of windows and a signature glass “silo” staircase greet you as you enter the lodge offering the perfect vantage point for the spectacular views.
With an appreciation and love for the property and its history, in the early 2000’s a small group of Investors purchased the Mountain Top Inn & Resort and have carefully nurtured its evolution from small country inn to a premier Mountain Lodge securing its position as one of Vermont’s most sought after destination resorts.
Today, the team at the Mountain Top couldn’t be more proud of our Vermont roots and heritage. Each morning we take inspiration from the fresh air and spectacular views and can’t wait to share our wonderful resort with each arriving guest. We hope that you will have the opportunity to visit us and ‘escape the everyday’ at the Mountain Top.
